38 Years In The BBC And Counting: From Newport To London And Back

I wish I could start with some profound words of wisdom, such as knowing from a young age that I was destined to do well in my career. Truth is that I am an ordinary person, born into an extraordinary family in a less-than-ordinary part of Newport – Pill, where it’s often asked, “Can anything good come out of Pill?” For the record, I totally disagree with that statement. When I was growing up, Pill was the most vibrant, diverse family/community anyone could wish for. An amazing place where people truly looked out for each other.

My career within the BBC started in The World Service, Bush House, London. At the tender age of 19, having left Newport for the bright lights of London it was a major culture shock, yet an amazing experience working with and for colleagues from all over the world. I really think those early years in the World Service laid the best foundation a person could ask for.
