When it comes to encouragement during pregnancy, most expecting mothers will have heard a variation of “women have been doing this for thousands of years and you can do it too!” A well-meant sentiment, but not always the most helpful, especially when giving birth in 2026 is very different to giving birth in 1926 – or even 1996!

Parents in 21st Century Britain have a lot to contend with when it comes to worries, because as technology and science have advanced, it feels like our concerns have advanced too. How do we protect our children in the age of social media? How will we turn around the climate crisis for their futures? What jobs will be left after the robots take over everything? And there are a million more questions that swirl around our minds when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth.

Who knew a debate over whether newborns needed to drink water could last three days?

When I was pregnant with my first son back in 2014, I remember downloading four different pregnancy tracker apps to follow his journey from a tiny ball of cells through various different fruit-sized stages. I just wanted to make sure that I had every base covered when it came to information and advice, but my excitement soon turned to slight confusion and eventual exhaustion as I tried to keep up with the slightly differing recommendations.

After he was born, I found myself still muddling through as I butted heads with family members over their own well-meant advice and suggestions. Who knew a debate over whether newborns needed to drink water could last three days? (Answer: they don’t.) And this was before I ventured into the world of social media and started hearing from a chorus of influencers and self-identified experts.

With so much information out there, it can be hard to know where to begin and who are voices we can trust. Despite the information overload, the reality is that the basics of looking after yourself and your baby during pregnancy, and creating a solid foundation for your child right from conception are tried and tested – no matter what your algorithm might tell you. And thankfully, all of that information can be found in one reliable source.
