Wales Made Black History Compulsory in Schools – Is It Enough, & Will The Rest Of The UK Step Up?

In 2020, as calls grew for greater inclusion and support of Black communities in schools, Wales conducted an investigation into its curriculum to examine how well Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) histories and communities were being reflected. It found that not enough was being done and appointed Professor Charlotte Williams OBE to chair a new working group to address the issues.

By 2021, the Welsh government accepted all recommendations put forward, resulting in a curriculum that prioritises Black history and increased recognition of Black communities. Unfortunately, this is not the same for schools across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, who each create and manage their own school curriculums and have yet to make Black history compulsory for students.
