Black British History Needs Our Radical Black Women Historians

There has been an increase in the retelling of Black history in recent years, but what about the proliferation of Black, and most pressingly, Black female historians? What stake do Black women have in the profession of chronicling the events of the past and making it accessible to us in the present, and are the spaces they work in at all inclusive, accessible and equitable?

According to the Royal Historical Society’s recent update to their 2018 report ‘Race, Ethnicity and Equality in UK History’, Black historians are underrepresented at all stages of analysis from undergraduate study right through to the top echelons of academia. In the year 2021-22 only 2.5% of students enrolled onto undergraduate courses in the discipline were from a Black ethnic background in comparison to 85.4% who were white.
