After living in Kent for ten years, I made the decision to return to London.
As a single Black woman in my sixties, it felt like the right move. My time in Kent was meaningful. I was part of a small community of Black women all of similar ages (50 to 70 years) and had contributed to the Ebbsfleet Citizens Archive, ensuring that Black and Brown people were visually present and remembered.
I was also an active part of the Gravesend and Kent arts scene, having exhibited my photographs at St George’s Art Gallery a number of times and at The Beaney in Canterbury as part of a county-wide mixed media show on Storytellers. The Sikh community makes up around 15% of the population in North Kent, and I had learned a great deal from them – particularly through visits to the local Gurdwara, where hospitality, history, and spirituality are beautifully intertwined.
