Why Are Black Sports Stars Never Respected?

Headlines about Tennis’ good girl gone bad Maria Sharapova have been seemingly ubiquitous lately. Just last week the disgraced former Wimbledon champion made her sensational come back from a 15-month doping ban in this year’s US Open, reaching the fourth round to the surprise and outrage of many.

However, in all the commotion no one (besides black Twitter) seems to have noticed the ludicrous and downright disrespectful claims made by Sharapova in her hotly anticipated autobiography ‘Unstoppable: my life so far’ regarding her so called ‘rivalry’ with Serena Williams.

In episode 17 season 500 of ‘White people making everything about themselves’, Sharapova has unbelievably claimed that part of Serena’s success can be traced to their rivalry.

In a preview of her book due to be released in September, Sharapova discusses her fraught relationship with Serena.

She says of her 2004 Wimbledon Victory over Williams:

“When the match was over, Serena hugged me. She said something like 'good job' and smiled. But she could not have been smiling on the inside. What I heard when I came in to the locker room was Serena Williams bawling. Guttural sobs. I got out as quickly as I could, but she knew I was there”.

"People often wonder why I have had so much trouble beating Serena; my record against her is two and 19. To me, the answer was in this locker room.

"I think Serena hated me for being the skinny kid who beat her, against all odds, at Wimbledon."
