Top Tips For Healthy Natural Hair Over Winter

Whether you are new to your natural hair journey, or a seasoned pro, one thing is for sure, winter weather does not discriminate when it comes to our hair. The cold and dry air means that our kinks and coils are more susceptible to dryness and frizz, which can result in thirsty hair and breakage.

Being a ‘naturalista’ for four years now, I have learnt over four winters that we need to adapt our hair and skin routines. Here are some tips to give your hair some TLC, for all hair types, especially type four.

Hydration is the name of the game

Typically, many naturalistas will wash their hair once a week with a dedicated ‘wash day’. While not everyone sticks to a weekly routine, it is ideal for maximum hydration. Your goal is to keep your hair as hydrated as possible from one wash day to the next. Washing it more often can lead to additional dryness, so our natural curls can stay juicy with a good quality deep conditioner, as well as a leave-in conditioner, during the wash day process.

After shampooing, apply deep conditioner as directed. For an extra hydration boost, you can add a deep conditioning heat cap, Lava Cap offers great ones. Opt for a microfibre towel to dry hair; I swear by my Soul Cap towel, which I wrap my hair in, as opposed to rubbing my hair dry which adds to the frizz and disturbs the cuticle.
