Sweating. I noticed the distinct smell of sweat as 11 writers and two Guardian staffers sat around a large mahogany table, water and sweets provided. It may have been coming off of me of course, the event I attended the night before had been boozy and late. However, I wouldn't have been surprised if it was one of the 11 men and women writers who, after a few weeks of negotiation between Media Diversified (which at the time consisted of me, Samira Sawlani and Yasmin Gunaratnam) and the Guardian staffers, had been invited to Guardian HQ to pitch two articles of their choosing. This was it. The pitches would be accepted in the room. Or not.
