The Stigma Behind Sexual Health Clinics

Sex is (supposed to be) fun. It’s enticing and tempting all-round. However, when it’s time to ensure that the sex you’ve been having hasn’t given you any unwelcome surprises, visiting the sexual health clinic can be anything but sexy. In fact, it can be an absolute nightmare.

I became sexually active at the age of 18 and looking back now that I’m 21, I realise that I had no idea what I was doing. My first sexual health check took place at a clinic near my university and walking in for the first time was terrifying.

Of course I wasn’t the only person in the reception area waiting to be seen and I didn’t expect to be, however while we were all in the clinic for similar reasons, I felt slightly uncomfortable being there. I didn’t recognise anyone in the room, yet I was embarrassed, as if being in a sexual health clinic must mean you’re dirty.
