The single mother narrative in the Black community has for years been encompassed by various negative stereotypes often rooted at the intersection of racism and sexism. However, recent trends have revealed that more Black women are choosing to voluntarily pursue this journey and are finding joy and fulfillment in it. 

Statistically speaking, the UK’s Black population has the largest proportion of single-parent households, and the Black community in general now has the highest population of people who have never been married or civil partnered in the UK.

With the rise of divorce rates and more opportunities for Black women – the unemployment rate for Black people in the UK has reduced by the largest percentage since 2004 – all these factors have fostered an environment where Black women feel more comfortable choosing the parenting journey without partners.
