The Miss Universe Controversy Is A Sign Of The Issues Jamaica Won't Face

I have never really been one to engage with beauty pageants, not for any particular reason, it’s just never been my thing. But this year’s Miss Universe will definitely be one I won’t forget. Like every year, my Twitter timeline was full of Miss This and Miss That, and talk about a questionable speech here or a dazzling swimsuit there.

As a lover of Caribbean culture, I expected the contestants from the region to dominate my timeline, especially Miss Jamaica. What I did not expect was the mess that was Miss Jamaica’s cultural costume. Nineteen year old Iana Tickle Garcia took to the stage in a costume which paid homage Annie Palmer, also known as the White Witch of Rose Hall.
