What's Next? How We Can Keep The Police & The British Justice System Accountable

From the ongoing investigation into the death of Blessing Ayomide Olusegun, to the actions of police officers meant to be investigating the murders of Bibaa Henry and Nichole Smallman, through to the flippant police response to the desperate mother of 19-year-old Richard Okorogheye, there are countless examples of Black people in crisis not being taken seriously or treated with respect.

For all its faults and issues, the increased use of social media has empowered many communities to tell their own stories. For Black communities around the world, it has become a space where we can take control of our narratives, celebrate Black culture(s), find Black businesses and raise awareness of issues affecting Black people. Very few national media outlets report fair and unbiased accounts of violence against Black people or the issues surrounding Black mental health, but from social media we have seen the launch of many independent platforms, social change movements, online resources that centre these issues and spread awareness.
