In the current climate, becoming financially independent as Black women can be challenging. From rising national insurance to cost of living prices, student loan repayments, mortgages, bills… the list goes on.
There is always something demanding our hard-earned coin, and that’s before setting some aside for savings and self-care. Gaining financial freedom doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s a much deeper issue than simply having better money management.
There’s no doubt it’s daunting to discuss what’s happening in our bank accounts. Research shows beliefs about money are formed in childhood, and are normally set between the ages of seven and nine. When most of us have been taught that it’s disrespectful to ask about earnings, savings, and debt, it’s no surprise we carry the same narratives into our adult lives and stay silent when the subject arises.
