As the saying goes, if you want something done properly, do it yourself. I’ve always subscribed to that idea. But it wasn’t until recently that I realised how literally I’d taken that advice. And it’s been even less time since I understood how detrimental that solitude has been for my wellbeing.
Rather than encouraging general proactiveness, I chose to take it one step further. From emotional issues to everyday chores, I often try to go it alone for as long as I can before I break, safe in the myth that one is as equipped to deal with me and my duties as I am. Suffice to say, it’s killing me. And, based on the conversations I’ve had with a number of people, I’m sure the same is happening to many others too.
