Founder's Letter: My Kids Have Main Character Energy Because Of Their Black Books

I know it’s only week two of 2024, but I’m feeling optimistic that it will bring good things. I guess a more accurate description of how I am feeling, is hopeful. I’ve started this year slower than usual, not all my goals are written down, I’ve only ran once each week, but I feel absolutely fine about starting slower. The reason being is because I’m starting and giving my mind and heart the time to really decide on what it is I want.

One thing that hasn’t changed is that I always want to be intentional in my journey of motherhood. Intentional about the things my children consume, the words they hear and the spaces I take them to. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I got a white doll as a gift. I returned the gift and explained that as a parenting unit, we have decided that the books and dolls our children will have must feature black characters. Some friends at the time called me extra and I would be lying if I said we didn’t have a few books and toys that didn’t centre black characters.
