A little secret about me? I am not a big fan of celebrity relationships, or really any relationships that play out on social media. While I love a good romance, I think it is important to understand that when a relationship is public, there is often an element of performance to it. That is not to say that I believe all public relationships are fake, just that we have to recognise that parts of what we are seeing are curated, edited, and shaped for an audience we are also part of.
Yet, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t hopeful for Megan Thee Stallion to have her happy ending with Klay Thompson, but unfortunately their relationship has come to an end after allegations of infidelity on his part. There is something so beautiful about a black woman falling in love and being loved out loud. When I asked myself why I wanted this relationship to last, I realised it was because, in a world that constantly calls on black women to take care of themselves and everyone around them, a world that demands resilience as a default, there is something deeply moving about seeing a black woman be held, be chosen, and be allowed to soften.
