Founder's Letter: Five Years Since George Floyd: The Performance of Progress

Cast your mind back five years. I was sitting in our first flat, staring at my newborn. They say nothing can prepare you for motherhood — and they, whoever they are, are absolutely right. The first month of motherhood is an adjustment like no other. But becoming a first-time mum against the backdrop of COVID-19 was something no one could have imagined.

Then came the murder of George Floyd and everything that followed.

I believe everyone reading this newsletter knows what happened to George Floyd, so I won’t go into the details. But his murder was meant to be a reckoning — a wake-up call and a confrontation to white people and those with privilege. It was supposed to signal that systemic change across the board was urgently needed to ensure nothing like that ever happened again.
