Black History Month is a shit show. There’s actually no other way to put it. It’s been crickets — a far cry from the Black History Month we had in 2020. I’ve thought Black History Month in the UK was a shit show for years, and 2025 has done nothing to change my mind. Quite the opposite, actually.
However, this October has forced me to revisit some questions that have always sat in the back of my mind. One that my husband has been adamant about asking me is: “Who the hell is Black History Month for?”
It has always felt like a tick-box exercise for non-black-founded or led companies to create a momentary smokescreen — something to make it seem like they embrace a racially diverse workplace, or to push out a campaign designed to make black women hand over their cash. So, with that being said, who are these talks, events, and campaigns really for?
