The ability to travel is one of the greatest gifts life has to offer, well it is in my opinion. The opportunity to see another city, embrace another culture and enjoy foods authentically from local eateries are moments that help shape us and provide memories that we capture for life with the help of our smartphones.
But travelling while black always adds an extra layer of uncertainty. At times you’re unsure whether you’ll get to enjoy the city of your choice as you should without overt or subtle racism. I spoke about my experience in Switzerland earlier this year, being in an airport and being questioned relentlessly whether I was really supposed to be in business class. Yet, when travelling abroad, being questioned by airport staff about which flight class one should be travelling in, is just the start of the repercussions of travelling when black.
