It feels good to be back.
While I love writing this newsletter, the pressure to turn out a weekly read each Sunday left me a little frazzled, which prompted me to say out loud that I needed a break from my Sunday writing. A few years ago, I was of the mindset that asking for a break was a sign of weakness. It feels stupid to even write that, but as women and especially as a black women, we have internalised those messages of carrying on despite our sufferings small and big.
While taking this break from the newsletter, I turned a year older. I think birthdays often force you to reflect on the last 12 months of life and being one year away turning 30, I burst into a state of panic of all things I haven’t done and I am yet to achieve. I thought maybe I should list all the things I want to achieve before 30, but I realised I was judging myself by the things I am yet to achieve and not the things I have achieved, which isn’t healthy or fair to myself.
