I am filled with butterflies as I write this Editor’s Letter. I feel excited because, in a way, this marks the kick-off for Black Ballad’s journey in 2017. I’m nervous because writing for black women is one of the most important things I do in my life and I always want to get things right. Finally, it feels surreal to be writing this Editor’s Letter as myself and my co-founder juggle the re-launch and re-design of Black Ballad’s new website and membership platform.

However, this letter isn’t just about my feelings. This editor’s letter is also about the appreciation I have for Viola Davis. Yep, I hear the nods of agreement and the claps of solidarity through the screens, as we all appreciate the incandescent presence of Ms. Viola Davis.

Last Sunday, watching her accept her Academy Award was a moment for all of us and as everyone rightly said, Viola deserved an Oscar for that acceptance speech. When I woke up the next morning,  I scoured social media and rejoiced, as I saw her beautiful dark skin wrapped in the beautiful red fabric of that Armani off the shoulder dress, while holding that coveted golden statue.
