Editor's Letter: British Politics Continues To Leave Black Brits Politically Frustrated

When I started writing my Editor’s Letters in 2017, I didn’t know they would turn out to be a reading ritual for some people or such a cathartic release for me. I’ve always tried to use these letters to make sense of the world around me as a Black Briton and at times, I'll admit, that's been hard.

This week, I thought about writing about a few things - but the only topic that stuck with me was politics. From May’s resignation, to Brexit, to the European election there is only one word to describe all and that is: shambolic. So much has been said that I would probably sound like a broken record. While I don’t have an ounce of sympathy for the Prime Minister as she starts the process to leave 10 Downing Street, I do feel somewhat anxious about the unknown. What Prime Minister is waiting for us next? My gut tells me that the next Prime Minister is someone who calls black people Picaninnies with watermelon smiles, or believes that Africa would still be a better place if it was still under colonial rule, or that Muslim women resemble letterboxes due to their decision to wear a Burka.
