Black Women On The Joys and Challenges Of Caring For Children With Disabilities

In the realm of caregiving, there exists a group of remarkable women whose stories often remain veiled from the world – the devoted carers of children living with disabilities.

Eleven percent of children in the UK are disabled and the majority of them live at home with family. Data from the 2021 Census also reveals that women are more likely to take on the role of unpaid carer for loved ones.

Motherhood is challenging regardless of circumstances, but caring for a child with disabilities introduces more complexities and challenges to a role that already lacks a handbook. We speak with four mothers who granted us the privilege of stepping into their world as they share their personal journeys.
