Black Women Need To Reclaim Our Hobbies From Side Hustle Culture

Do you ever need a mental break from your routine? Would you like to have something that is just yours? Or is there that one activity that has always sparked your interest, but you’ve never really explored?

Then you might need to pick up a new hobby.

The average person in the UK has three hobbies, with the most popular being reading, cooking/baking and travelling. Socialising and pets follow closely behind in 4th and 5th place.

Just to make sure we’re all on the same page, a hobby is defined as “an activity done in one’s leisure time for pleasure”.

Saying that, as Black women, we are the highest UK demographic to transform our leisure activities, or hobbies, into side hustles. It’s clear that we have an entrepreneurial mindset and that economic pressures don’t always allow us to do activities for pure enjoyment.
