Yes, Black Women Are Redefining English Cricket Too!

If this was tennis, Sophia Dunkley would be England’s own Serena. She’s already in the history books as the first black woman to score a century for England (that’s 100 runs in a single match). She’s also the first black woman to play Test cricket for England. (Test matches are the longer, traditional type of cricket played with a red ball and players that are usually dressed all in white.)

At just 26, Sophia’s already represented England in World Cups. She’s smashed sixes in T20 Internationals – that’s the faster-paced, white-ball version of the game played in one evening. She’s lit-up One Day Internationals (ODIs), the full-day matches where each team gets 50 overs to score as many runs as they can. (One over is six balls.)

But don’t get it twisted, Sophia is no overnight sensation. She was the first girl to play on the boys First XI at her school, played club cricket (also with the boys), joined girls’ teams and then played at county level. She moved through England’s development squads and got her first call-up in 2018. She was also part of the South East Stars, one of England’s first fully professional domestic women’s teams, so she was paid a full time salary to play. And if you needed proof that she’s still in beast mode, Sophia was just named Player of the Match in England’s winning T20I game against India!
