Due to their willingness to partake in misogynoir and sustain male-dominated and patriarchal systems, it’s not surprising that some men within our community are proudly right wing. But some prominent Black women like rapper Sexyy Red, conservative commentator Candace Owens, founder of the political party Nova Direita (the Portuguese New Right) Ossanda Liber, actor Stacey Dash, and most recently Amber Rose have surprisingly joined the right wing bandwagon too, leaving many wondering what’s the rationale behind it.
Although Black women have always been crucial in upholding progressive politics and advocating for an inclusive and fair sense of justice, we’re now met with influential Black women figures on the other side of the fence. Even if it’s a small number, the damaging repercussions for the cultural landscape as well as the political and social dynamics within Black communities are far greater than what one may expect.
What does this mean for the collective political power that has been a cornerstone of Black community advocacy?
