If there is one black female fictional character that we’ve all spoken about in recent years it has been Queenie. Candice Carty-Williams’ debut novel about 25 year-old Queenie Jenkins made us laugh out loud and side eye some of her choices, but was a breath of fresh air in a literary world that lauded fictional tales of white women in their 20s.
Now Candice is taking Queenie (and the entire Jenkins clan) to the small screen in the Channel 4 adaptation of the award winning book in an eight part drama with Dionne Brown as the show’s title character. And on the 3rd of June, we will be holding an exclusive screening and Q&A afterwards.
The screening will be of the first two episodes, while the Q&A will be with Candice, Dionne, Unit Photographer Latoya Okuneye and Series Producer Lisa Walters, which will be chaired by Black Ballad’s Editor in Chief Jendella Benson.
The show stars Black British acting legends including Llewella Gideon (The Real McCoy) and Joseph Marcell (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air). Also, singer-songwriter Bellah will be joining the cast as Kyazike, Queenie’s longest-serving best friend from school.
Doors open at 6pm and there will be a drinks reception before the screening starts at 6:30pm and there will be a chance to mingle with afterwards with the Black Ballad community. And, you will be able to bring a plus 1 of your choice to experience the show together.
