The number of women who have never been married and have not had children is growing – including in black communities across the globe. This marks a change in desires, priorities and options for women – and this Galentine’s Day, we want to talk about it!
Call it what you want – “single by choice”, “strategic singlehood”, “happily single” or “self-partnered” – far from cautionary tales for younger women, more black women are choosing to live their best lives on their own terms, without partners. We know that this can be a radical act in communities where the decision to remain single is written off as a phase or the result of pain, and the choice for childfree can be judged to be selfish.

Join us for a thought-provoking and uplifting conversation with Dr. Kris Marsh – professor, sociologist, author of The Love Jones Cohort: Single and Living Alone in the Black Middle Class, and successful black woman living her best life on her own terms.
You might recognise Dr. Kris from the interview that broke Black Ballad’s IG in 2023. A clip of her explaining how racism constrains black women’s dating options gathered a lot of interest – from black women agreeing from their own experiences, to the usual naysayers coming with half-baked criticism. Like then, this promises to be a thought-provoking and engaging discussion, but in a safe and intimate space provided by our event partner, Kindred.
We’ll be discussing whether singleness is ever truly a choice, the price of freedom, settling down vs changing the criteria, celibacy, community, redefining the idea of family as well as an an honest discussion about the highlights and challenges of choosing yourself in a society that is built for the partnered. There will also be time to meet and mingle with your fellow Black Ballad members and everyone will get a goodie bag!
