BB Members Perk: Black Ballad Book Club Discusses... This Lovely City

It’s time for our next Black Ballad Book Club, a bi-monthly perk for all of our bookish members!

In our first BB Book Club of the year, we will be discussing This Lovely City by Louise Hare on Thursday 18th April at 7pm.

BB Book Club by Louise Hare

One thing about a well-written historical novel is that it can be the most engaging and revealing history lesson. Thankfully, we have a wealth of top tier fiction set in the past written by Black British women.

This Lovely City by Louise Hare is just one of those. Set after the Second World War, it follows Lawrie Matthews, a jazz musician who arrived in the Empire Windrush and is building a new life for himself in South London. Since it’s release in 2020, This Lovely City has had rave reviews and was also a book pick for BBC Two’s Between The Covers.

Frankly we don’t see, hear, read enough about the Windrush generation, their legacy and contributions and perhaps this erasure has paved the way for the kind of mistreatment by the British government we’ve seen in recent years. We're looking forward to diving into this beautiful book that is as much about community and hope, as it is about the Babylon that West Indian men and women found themselves in when they were invited here in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

If you don’t already have the book, please grab a copy from our featured black owned book store for this month, Sevenoaks Bookshop, owned by Black Ballad Member & one of our Faces of the Modern British Workforce, Fleur Sinclair from Kent! Or, of course you can go to your preferred book shop.
