What Does It Mean To Be Black And British When You Weren't Born in Britain?

After experiencing the Windrush scandal and with the rise in Brexit-induced Xenophobia, new documentary Leaving Home at Seven is beyond important.

Created by a Guyanese-born, London based filmmaker who left home at seven years old, Tamala Ceasar is passionate about her identity and culture, and attributes that to being brought up back home: “It’s given me a strong sense of identity and self - especially in my older years. I see the world differently because I know what home looks like, feels like and sounds like - despite what the media may frame it as.”

Leaving Home At Seven explores the complex issues around belonging and identity through eight stories from first and second generation people from Africa and the Caribbeans. I wanted to ask Tamala why these accounts were important, especially in our current socio-political, cultural climate?
