This Woman's Work: 1Xtra Presenter Sian Anderson

28 year-old Sian Anderson is managing motherhood with a demanding career. We sat down with the 1Xtra presenter to talk about a typical working day, why you always need to keep learning in your career and the importance of supporting women as they get back into the working world after having a child.

BB: In your own words, what do you do?

SA: Various things. I’m a DJ and presenter on BBC Radio 1xtra, I am a mentor, so I run FLOOR SIXX music academy and a programme called Next Step with the Mayor [of London}. I’m a mum, most importantly, and I’m a marketing exec and A&R at Parlophone Records.

BB: How do you manage to balance all of these hustles?

SA: Probably experience. I’m about 11 years into my career, so I’ve just managed to balance all of the things that I do properly and make sure each [job I do] has its own time. I have a really good team of people around me which help me do all this stuff, which is good.

BB: Awesome, so do you feel like you’ve got your career figured out now? Or do you still have more to learn?

SA: No, no. You’re always, always learning. You’ve always got more to learn. This industry is not stagnant, it’s always changing. You’ve got to have a boss all the time, to teach you what else is going on.
