“There’s Quality People In Brum!” – Lumi HD on Birmingham’s Music Scene & Second City Syndrome

Did you know that Supacell – the hit Netflix series that landed at number in the streamer’s global top ten – is scored by a Brummie?

“And Corey – you know Corey?” Lumi HD asks me, calling on the name of a local church we both know, before telling me that Corey Marlon Lindsay-Keay – who attended that church – was one of the writers for Tyla’s mega-hit, ‘Water’.

“Yeah, that’s Corey! And he did a couple of songs with Shenseea on her newest album – he’s absolutely killing it – there’s quality people in Birmingham!”

We’re talking over Zoom about the music scene in Birmingham – my hometown, and where Lumi still lives and performs. I’ve known Lumi since before my memories started forming (we have the photographs to prove it) and she’s filling me in on the details of the creative scene of a city I left the minute I turned 18.
