“Everything I Do Feels Like I’m Running A Marathon” – June Ambrose On Taking Risks, Trusting Her Younger Self & Her New Collection With PUMA

When you meet June Ambrose, you feel like you’ve known her forever. Her demeanour is relaxed and inviting, and before we got started on the formal part of our interview, we chatted at length about Nigerian scammers (sorry to my fellow Nigerians), the Caribbean diaspora, work and life after 2020 and just how dark it was getting already at 4.30pm on a wet afternoon in London.

The thing is, in some ways we have known June Ambrose forever. Before, I knew her name, I knew The Look that she created with long-time collaborator Hype Williams. The iconic, glossy, unapologetic luxury of 90s and early 00s hip hop – the UV club scene from Belly, Missy Elliot’s inflatable suit in ‘The Rain’, the shiny, shiny suits that Diddy and Biggie danced around in in the video for ‘Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems’ – that was all June and Hype, and as a child of the 90s and 00s, that was all I wanted to look like.
