Growing up, many Black alternative fans felt like the only one, and that didn’t always change once reaching adulthood.
Despite being connected now more than ever, being a Black alt fan in alt spaces can still be an isolating experience.
I spoke with alt fan Tenneil (she/her), indie afro-pop musician ELI, and Not OK Club founder Yanaboth (they/them).
We discussed growing up in London, discovery through Kerrang, the importance of other Black alt friends, and how a dream birthday party started a string of Not OK Club’s emo events for queer people of colour.
