“Bradford Made Me”: Growing Up In The North In The 60s

They tell authors never to read reviews of their books on Goodreads, therein lies madness, apparently. I didn’t listen and so, pathetically in need of some validation, I dived in.

The first one I read was a five star review of my debut novel The Mercy Step. “Sharp, witty, fresh, powerful and un-put-down-able!” says the reviewer, (a vivacious Black Jamaican woman). She also mentions – twice in one short paragraph – that the book is set in London. It isn’t. It’s set in my home town of Bradford, but so ingrained is the notion that the Black British Community all live in London that even someone who read and obviously loved the book thought it was set in the south of England.
