I am a therapist of Jamaican, Irish and English heritage living in Bristol. Walking around I see Black people in interracial relationships – an endless variety of mixes. Some will eventually have children of mixed or even multiracial heritage.
With the blessing and support of their families and communities they may grow up secure in their identity and their communities. But this will not be the case for all. Those struggling with their identity and sense of belonging seek my support.
These are just some examples of the clients I work with – anonymised, with no identifying characteristics.
Caro has a Jamaican mother and Indian Sikh father. Her father’s parents still do not approve of the relationship; they grew to adore their mixed race grandchildren but are ashamed of their dark skin. Her mother’s family were always more accepting of the relationship and the grandchildren, but there is still colourism.
