The Real Reason You Can’t Stop Thinking About Your Toxic Ex

One of my all-time favourite movies is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry, 2004), a film about a couple so desperate to recover from their painful break up, that they decide to undergo an unregulated procedure to erase every last memory they have of each other.

Maybe, like me, you’ve been there too. Maybe you’ve been so destabilised by a break-up, that you might have considered getting a love lobotomy in exchange for a little peace of mind. You tried the usual advice: you blocked them on social media, deleted all the photos of the two of you together, and donated the guitar they left behind to charity. For a while you were fine, relieved even, until one day, you’re in Tesco browsing the potatoes, or at home hanging out with your new partner, when out of nowhere, you’re hit with a painful memory or wave of panic you can’t quite explain.
