In popular media, Blackness, womanhood, and disability rarely co-exist in the same frame, let alone as a symbol of strength. For too long, disabled Black women have existed at the peripheries of power, rendered invisible by systems that flatten their stories or reduce them to mere survival.
Disability Pride affirms that disability is a natural part of being human and is ultimately about dignity, identity, and the unapologetic right to belong. This Disability Pride Month, Black Ballad spoke to three women who are refusing erasure, reclaiming brilliance, and crafting new narratives of power on their terms. From elite sports and cutting-edge STEM innovation to radically inclusive wellness, these women are not content to fit in. They are reshaping systems and redefining power for themselves.
