‘One Of Them Days’ Is For The Ordinary Black Girls Trying To Get By

In the age of social media’s obsession with luxury and effortless wealth, it feels like thriving is reserved for a select few. Black women, in particular, can be met with navigating a landscape where beauty routines, wigs, braids, etc, can reach eye-watering costs and the vision of living a “soft-life” can feel out of reach no matter how hard you are trying to level up.

Sometimes there’s just one obstacle after another, a never-ending cycle of trying to get by.

In Issa Rae’s and Syreeta Singleton’s new film, One of Them Days, flourishing feels out of reach for best friends Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA). Tensions between the two reach boiling point when they find themselves strapped for cash with only hours to pay their rent or face eviction. It’s safe to say chaos ensues as they go to extreme lengths through the streets of Los Angeles, and explore every avenue to get the money together as quickly as possible.
