There was a moment in Dreaming Whilst Black season two where I thought, “Oh, I didn’t realise this is what I’ve been missing.”
It was in a slightly fraught exchange between lead character Kwabena, played by the series creator, writer and executive producer Adjani Salmon, and his best friend Amy, played by Dani Mosley. They were discussing their careers in the context of one of them appearing to be in a significantly better place than the other.
This particular iteration of “survivor’s guilt” is a peculiar but familiar feature of modern adulthood in a post-2008, post-pandemic world. As I watched the scene play out, at the front of my mind was my own experiences of lopsided “slaying” within friendships. Then I thought, ‘How often do we get to see adulting represented in such an incredibly relatable way?’
