Renée* enjoys smoking weed and has dabbled with edibles and oils too. But she’s conscious of the stigma that comes with it.
“Black women who use cannabis are seen as lazy, unmotivated, depressed, insecure, and more likely to be arrested,” she tells me. “As a mum, I often feel judged.”
Earlier this month, Germany joined a growing number of countries and US states that have legalised and regulated cannabis. Germans will join the nearly half a billion people living in jurisdictions where adults can access cannabis for recreational use.
While Malta, Ghana and Canada stride forward towards more progressive approaches, England remains a relic of the failed policies of the past. The country remains committed to draconian drug laws and harsh rhetoric that disproportionately polices black people.
