We are pleased to announce that Black Ballad has secured the bag & has been awarded a £70,000 grant from the Future of News Fund, powered by NESTA & Bethnal Green Ventures to better empower, create for & serve black women outside of London.
Our proposal to better serve black women was given the joint highest grant amount among 16 other grant winners and 178 total applications. We highlighted that the black British community outside of London is being silenced by two key trends: the fact that British journalism is only 0.2% black and the overall decline of local news. We know that most black British journalists and creators are based in London, so we want to use this project as a starting point to change that.
Over the next 5+ months, Black Ballad will be:
- Hiring freelance black British female regional editors across the UK
- Commissioning black British female writers, filmmakers, photographers & podcasters outside of the capital
- Creating research to highlight the differences between the black British experience in & outside of London
- Hosting events in at least three non-London cities for black women
Hopefully, this is just be the start. Our mission is to build a membership that helps all black women in Britain realise how she can change her world through every click she makes and every conversation she has. Thanks to NESTA, Bethnal Green Ventures & the Black Ballad community, we're able to take this very exciting step to make this into a reality.
Take The Survey
The Great Black British Women's Survey is now live! This survey & research focuses on the differing experiences of black women based on where they live in Britain.
The survey is relevant for ALL women of African or Caribbean heritage based in Britain, and will take an average of 18 minutes of your time.
The resulting content & data will illustrate the impact of location on black women's experiences across everyday considerations like beauty & access to cultural foods, but flashbulb moments in history like Brexit & the Coronavirus pandemic.
Create For Black Ballad
One of our goals for this project is to pay and provide a platform for as many black British female creators as possible. In the coming months, we'll be looking for editors, writers, filmmakers, illustrators, podcast creators, photographers and more, especially outside of London for a range of commissions.
