3A? 4C? – Here’s What We Are Getting Wrong About “Hair-Typing”

Today many Black women do not have to search far and wide to find out information on how to take care of their natural hair. All they have to do is type their ‘hair type’ into Google and hundreds of results will come up.

You might be familiar with the term ‘hair-typing’ or seen special terms such as ‘4C’ or ‘Type 4 hair’. This is all thanks to the well-known 1A-4C hair-typing system created by Andre Walker.

As Oprah Winfrey’s hair stylist he introduced the world to the system on her show in the 1990s and the rest was history. He was hoping to promote his products as well as debunking the good hair vs bad hair debate. But if anything the debate became deeper.

Of course, the rise of the internet and social media amplified everything. The natural hair community took to the hair-typing system like crack and began to align their wash day routines to it.
