Why Black Women Love Shakespeare

Shakespeare is in many ways an English institution. For young and old alike, his work has held a cultural significance that is hard to overstate.

Us Brits literally cannot complete our secondary education let alone pass through our adulthood without interacting with one of his works. His sonnets are the first we cover when we are being introduced to the form; his plays serve as the highest held example of writing for theatre the country has ever seen.

Though his writing has always been present in our lives, it seems that with an increased number of high profile adaptations (just this year, we have seen confirmation of star studded theatre productions in both the West End and on Broadway, as well as a London set film version of Hamlet set to drop next year), we are living once more in a Shakespearean resurgence.
