Our National Treasures: The Black Women in Noughties British Music And Beyond

The current music scene in Britain is truly great, but it’s a world away from what I remember from my childhood. Unfortunately for me, other than a few musicians like Ray BLK, NAO, Little Simz, Lady Leshurr and Laura Mvula, the representation of black women in British music now comes in a lighter, younger package with music styles and aesthetics that are increasingly hard to differentiate. Personally, my favourite time for music was probably the noughties. Not only did this time have such a variety of genres in the charts, brazen fashion, and a whole host of strange duets (like Blue and Elton John), it was a time in history where black women, dark skinned black women, were visible and celebrated in the British music scene.
