Why I left My Home In The UK For A New Life In West Africa

In December 2018 I decided that I was tired. I decided that enough was enough and I was going to just do it – something I had been contemplating for a while, something that I had been rattling my brain wondering if it could work. I had been wondering if I could leave the life I knew in the UK and live in my country of origin, Sierra Leone. Truth be told, there was only one way to find out, and that was by doing it. My annual December trip to Freetown, Sierra Leone turned into my relocation, my new home. I’m currently one year and one month in and it’s a decision I’m yet to regret – if anything I think it was a timely move.

I was born and raised in a town called Crawley, in the South East of the UK. For the most part, I enjoyed growing up there. I loved living in the UK as a child, however not so much as I grew up and became an adult. At the time I do not think I was sure why that was, but now I think I outgrew it or found somewhere else I would prefer to be. Or perhaps both of these reasons.
