The Challenges Facing Black Businesses In The North West

The importance of supporting black businesses has never been more prominent. Here in the Manchester, many black-owned retailers provide important goods and services for black consumers needing essentials in the community. But it’s not without its challenges.

Though such businesses serve us so greatly, there are various complications of running these in areas where black consumers are smaller in numbers. Whilst Greater Manchester is considered one of the most ethnically diverse cities outside of London, black people still account for just 8% of the city’s population. Though I have no trouble purchasing plantain or hair grease in central Manchester, specialist black businesses outside of London can often start-up and close quickly for reasons like licensing issues, lack of clientele and lack of local support. Such factors mean those who are successful usually hold inspiring levels of savvy to navigate such a difficult market.
