Norwich’s New Women-Empowered Anti-Racism Movements & Britain’s Forgotten History

A new chapter in Norwich’s anti-racist activism has begun. The spark in protests within the UK and around the globe has generated an electrifying current running through Norfolk’s main city – a current that has enabled the creation of vibrant new anti-racist movements in a county that is 97% white. The people responsible for these movements: black women. 

This is not only a trend within Norwich, but beyond. For example, we know – or we should know – that Black Lives Matter was created by three women (two of them queer), namely Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi. Black women have also been leaders in the Civil Rights struggles and other past anti-racist movements, both in the UK, the US and around the world, however, a lot of our history is overshadowed by the patriarchal structures that be.
