How Is Sport Helping Us Celebrate The Diversity In Black Womanhood?

As the curtain closes on the last few weeks of world class sport, it is clear that from the World Athletic Championships to the World Gymnastics Championships this time period will go down in history as some of the most memorable sporting activity to date. The World Athletic Championships saw the debut of the controversial “mixed relay” events, while some of sport’s youngest competitors made history at the recent WTA tournament and Gymnastic Championships.

The World Athletics competition saw some truly electric performances and was a fittingly exciting prequel to the much-anticipated Tokyo Olympic games due to take place next summer. Three world records were set and an additional six championship records were also broken in what many were calling the highest standard ever seen at a World Athletics Championship to date.

Despite their obvious merit, it wasn’t the sporting performances that left the most lasting impact on me. As a former athlete and general all-round sports junkie myself, I know more than anyone that the biggest influence sport can have goes far beyond the confines of the stadium. As an internationally recognised medium, sport is invaluable in providing us with lessons about our daily lives, a microcosm as such for wider society.
