From Employee To Entrepreneur: Why More Black Women Are Choosing To Work For Themselves

The rise of the black female entrepreneur. According to the Harvard Business Review, black women are the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs in the US. While the figures are less established for the UK, more and more black women are leaving their careers and opting to work for themselves. This is becoming more visible, in documentaries like ‘She Did That’, and books such as ‘Slay in your Lane: The Black Girl Bible’.

It was this book in particular that inspired me to leave my ten-year career in teaching and forge my journey into entrepreneurship. It states, as black women, ‘we are more open to breaking down boundaries; we see barriers as opportunities and we imagine new ways to solve problems and add value to the world – all characteristics required to be a successful entrepreneur’.
